The Science Fair
The Ben Rush Science fair was very fun. There were rows and rows of tables with projects back to back, probably 40-50 projects. Gus loved the perennial baking soda/ vinegar volcano eruption. Amy loved the exhibit about what makes things fluoresce (glow in the dark), Grandpa got a kick about the one that analyzed whether raisins float or do not float. Jonah's classmate Siddarth, who had the project to the left of Jonah, looked at whether the shape of a bubble wand affected the shape of the bubble.
Mom and Dad were pretty giddy with pride when we had adult after adult say that they had wondered about the same question that Jonah had asked. I think that most of us have observed the phenomenon and pretty much assumed it was wind being blocked by the bridge, but something about a 6 year old asking the question and doing the experiment allowed people to react with joy and relief that they were right. One man told Jason that he was showing his relatives from India around Seattle and they had asked the question. He said, "Now I know what to tell them." Several adults asked Jonah when he "planned on charging a toll" for his bridge. Probably could have had the "Good to go pass" people sponsor his project.
And there were robots in the library! This was a highlight for both boys as they watched fifth and sixth graders who had programmed robots to draw squares and triangles, knock over colored bowling pins and get out of a maze.
Jonah had a positive experience on the whole. He continues to amaze us in that while we think of him as relatively shy and cautious next to his brother Gus, he handles himself very well in these all -school functions, making friends with older kids, connecting with his classmates. initiating conversations and enjoying the event. Of course it helps that he also was the first ticket drawn in the raffle for a prized of a video game. Maybe he has a bit of his Uncle Matt's luck? We will see, the carnival is in May. :)
