The Easter story according to Gus

On the ride over to Poulsbo the day before Easter, Gus was playing with the drawing program on his Iphone (older model with no service.) He showed me this first picture and when I asked him to pass the phone forward so I could inspect the picture more closely, I asked him to tell me about the picture.

He said, "That is Jesus. He DIED on the cross!" And then with emphasis he said "DIED."

I understood that he understood that it was significant that he died, but wanted to make sure he got the whole story so I said, "But then what happened?" And handing his phone back to him I said "Draw me a picture of what happened next."

He drew this and handed the phone back to me:
I said, "What is this?" He said, " After he DIED (emphasis again) They buried him in a tomb and rolled a big rock in front of the hole."

So once again, not wanting to leave it there, I passed the phone back and said "And then what happened?"

He drew and handed the phone back to me even quicker this time, with this on the screen:
Continuing in our pattern, I asked, "And tell me about this? What is this?"
Gus says, "The next day the tomb was empty."
I said, "Why was it empty?"
Gus said, "Because he got risen."
I clarified, "Yes, he 'came back to life' and that is what why we celebrate Easter!"
I added, handing his phone back to him, "Good job Gus! I like your pictures!"

Jason and I exchanged smiles and I thought that was that.

But then, he handed the phone back to me a few minutes later. And he had drawn this:

I said, "Who is this?" Thinking that we had moved on to a family portrait.

Gus says, "Oh... that's Jesus and the children. He likes children"

He does indeed.

Happy Easter.
